🎃🎄 Merry & Scary™: Because Apparently Halloween and Christmas Are Dating Now
There was once a time when holidays knew their place. Halloween showed up in October. Thanksgiving arrived in November. Christmas patiently waited until December.
Those days are over. Walk into a store in August and you’ll find a 12-foot skeleton standing approximately six feet away from an inflatable Santa Claus.
And you know what? We’re completely fine with this.
Welcome to Merry & Scary™, where Halloween meets Christmas, pumpkins wear Santa hats, skeletons string Christmas lights, and nobody can quite remember which holiday we’re supposed to be celebrating anymore. Frankly, it’s awesome.
🎃 + 🎄 = ❤️
At first glance, Halloween and Christmas shouldn’t work together. One holiday has ghosts, monsters, haunted houses and people deliberately trying to scare children.
The other has Santa, elves, reindeer, cookies and people lying to children about a man entering their house through the chimney. Actually…
Maybe they’re more similar than we thought.
Both involve ridiculous amounts of candy. Both encourage adults to decorate their homes to unreasonable levels. Both have movies people watch every single year.
Both involve elaborate costumes. And both somehow convince otherwise financially responsible adults that spending $179 on a giant inflatable lawn decoration is perfectly reasonable. They’re practically cousins.
1. Put Santa Hats on Your Skeletons
You’ve already spent $300 building a skeleton army in your front yard. Don’t put those hardworking employees away November 1. Give them Santa hats. Suddenly they’re Christmas skeletons. That’s called maximizing your investment.
2. Build a Halloween Christmas Tree
Black Christmas tree. Orange lights. Tiny pumpkins. Ghost ornaments. Spiderweb garland. A witch hat instead of a star. 🎃 Boom.
Christmas tree manufacturers probably didn’t envision this particular abomination, but that’s their problem.
3. Make Gingerbread Haunted Houses
Why does gingerbread architecture always have to be adorable? Build a haunted mansion. Crooked roof. Candy gravestones. Gummy worms crawling through the yard.
Little gingerbread people desperately fleeing for their lives. Now we’re baking.
4. Give Your Jack-o’-Lantern a Santa Hat
This requires almost no effort and immediately transforms:
🎃 Halloween pumpkin
into:
🎅🎃 Sir Pumpkin Claus, Lord of Merry & Scary.
We don’t make the rules. Actually, we just made that rule.
5. Watch Christmas Horror Movies
Christmas movies don’t necessarily require someone discovering the true meaning of Christmas while falling in love with their childhood neighbor who inexplicably owns a successful Christmas-tree farm. There are plenty of Christmas horror movies. Some are creepy. Some are ridiculous. Some make you question the decisions of everyone involved in their production. Perfect.
6. Replace Milk & Cookies With Something Spookier
Santa gets milk and cookies at approximately 900 million houses. He’s probably ready for some variety. Try monster cookies. Ghost-shaped brownies. Hot chocolate with spooky marshmallows. Maybe leave Rudolph a pumpkin. We don’t know whether reindeer eat pumpkins. He’ll figure it out.
7. Create a Christmas Graveyard
Keep the Halloween tombstones. Add snow. Christmas lights. Maybe a wreath.
Suddenly:
HERE LIES GRANDMA
GOT RUN OVER BY A REINDEER
Too far? Possibly.
Moving on.
8. Christmas Lights Make EVERYTHING Better
Haunted house? Christmas lights. Skeleton? Christmas lights. Giant spider? Christmas lights. Creepy doll sitting inexplicably in the corner?
Actually…
Burn that one.
9. Candy Canes Can Absolutely Be Creepy
Red and white stripes. Hook shape. Sharp point after you’ve been sucking on one for twenty minutes. We’re just saying. Candy canes were halfway to becoming horror props already.
10. Create the Ultimate Merry & Scary Playlist
One minute:
🎶 Christmas music.
Next minute:
👻 spooky Halloween music.
Then Christmas.
Then Halloween.
Eventually everyone in your house will lose track of time, season and possibly reality.
Mission accomplished.
11. Decorate Whenever the Hell You Want
Here’s perhaps the most important rule of Merry & Scary™:
There aren’t any rules. Want pumpkins in August? Go for it. Christmas lights in October? Absolutely.
Skeleton wearing an ugly Christmas sweater? We want pictures.
Life has enough things we’re supposed to take seriously. Your holiday decorations don’t need to be one of them.
🎃🎄 Welcome to Merry & Scary™
Maybe Halloween doesn’t need to end completely when October 31 rolls around. And maybe Christmas doesn’t need to wait patiently until Thanksgiving has packed its bags. Maybe there’s room for a little overlap. A little weirdness. A little ridiculousness. A little Merry & Scary™.
Because if putting a Santa hat on a skeleton makes you laugh every time you walk past it… that’s reason enough.
🎃🎄 Stay Merry. Stay Scary. Make Life Awesome.
