🍿 10 Movies to Get You in the Fall Mood
From cozy classics to darker autumn favorites, these movies practically come with crisp air, changing leaves and a warm drink.
There’s something about fall that makes watching a movie feel better.
Maybe it’s getting dark a little earlier. Maybe it’s the first night cool enough to grab a blanket. Maybe it’s finally being able to watch something without feeling guilty that you should be outside mowing something.
Whatever the reason, fall movie season has arrived. 🍂
And no, a fall movie doesn’t have to be a Halloween movie. Some movies just feel like fall. They have changing leaves, college campuses, cozy bookstores, small towns, old houses, mysteries, magic, or that slightly darker atmosphere that arrives when summer finally gets out of the way. So grab some popcorn, pour something warm and settle in.
Here are 10 movies to get you in the fall mood.
1. 🍁 When Harry Met Sally… (1989)
THE VIBE: New York City + changing leaves + sweaters + romance.
Few movies make autumn in New York look quite this good.
When Harry Met Sally… follows Harry and Sally through years of friendship, relationships and the persistent question of whether two people who know each other this well can really remain just friends.
But for our purposes?
It’s those gorgeous walks through Central Park surrounded by fall foliage that earn it a spot near the top of this list.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Changing leaves • sweaters • Central Park • coffee-shop conversations • cozy romance
DOOZY VERDICT: If fall had a romantic comedy, this might be it.
2. ☕ You’ve Got Mail (1998)
THE VIBE: Bookstores, coffee, New York neighborhoods and peak cozy-movie energy.
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star as rival bookstore owners who don’t realize they’re also falling for each other anonymously online.
Very 1998. And somehow still incredibly charming. There’s something about You’ve Got Mail that feels like putting on your favorite sweatshirt. Bookstores, cafés, neighborhood walks and that unmistakable New York-in-the-fall atmosphere make this an easy September watch.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Bookstores • coffee • sweaters • New York • cozy nostalgia
DOOZY VERDICT: Make coffee. Find blanket. Press play.
3. 📚 Dead Poets Society (1989)
THE VIBE: New England boarding school, old books and crisp autumn academia.
Welcome to Welton Academy. Robin Williams stars as English teacher John Keating, whose unconventional approach encourages his students to think differently about poetry, life and their own futures. The Vermont setting, traditional campus buildings, sweaters, changing seasons and old-school academic atmosphere make this one practically smell like fallen leaves and library books.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
New England • boarding school • old books • sweaters • changing leaves
DOOZY VERDICT: The ultimate dark-academia fall movie before anyone was calling it dark academia.
4. 🍂 Good Will Hunting (1997)
THE VIBE: Boston, Cambridge, college campuses and New England in autumn.
Will Hunting is a working-class Boston guy who also happens to be a mathematical genius. The story is ultimately about much more than math, though. It’s about friendship, relationships, potential and figuring out what the hell you’re going to do with your life. And Boston and Cambridge provide a near-perfect backdrop.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Boston • Cambridge • college campuses • New England • jackets • introspection
DOOZY VERDICT: Fall isn’t always cozy. Sometimes it’s the season that makes you think about where you’re going next.
5. 🔮 Practical Magic (1998)
THE VIBE: Witches, a gorgeous old house, small-town New England energy and just enough darkness.
Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman play the Owens sisters, descendants of a long line of witches dealing with love, family, magic and a rather inconvenient curse. This isn’t really a traditional Halloween movie. It’s better described as witchy fall comfort food.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Witches • candles • old houses • small-town atmosphere • magic • cozy darkness
DOOZY VERDICT: The moment September starts feeling remotely chilly, Practical Magic becomes acceptable viewing.
Not that we were waiting for permission.
6. 🕵️ Knives Out (2019)
THE VIBE: Sweaters, an enormous old mansion, murder and Chris Evans wearing knitwear that briefly became more famous than Chris Evans.
When wealthy mystery novelist Harlan Thrombey dies after his 85th birthday celebration, detective Benoit Blanc arrives to untangle a spectacularly dysfunctional family and determine what actually happened. It’s clever. It’s funny. It’s twisty. And visually, it’s autumn mystery perfection.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Old mansion • sweaters • mystery • fireplaces • chilly weather • family dysfunction
DOOZY VERDICT: Apparently nothing says cozy fall evening quite like a suspicious death in a giant Massachusetts mansion.
Human beings are strange.
7. 🦊 Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
THE VIBE: If someone turned the entire color palette of autumn into a movie.
Wes Anderson’s stop-motion adaptation of Roald Dahl’s story follows the clever Mr. Fox as his inability to stop stealing from three local farmers puts his family and community in danger. The oranges, browns, yellows and reds make virtually every frame look like fall.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Orange everything • farms • cider • leaves • harvest vibes • cozy stop-motion
DOOZY VERDICT: Possibly the most visually autumn movie ever made.
8. 🚀 October Sky (1999)
THE VIBE: Small-town America, cool nights, changing seasons and looking toward something bigger.
Based on Homer Hickam’s memoir, October Sky follows a teenager in a West Virginia coal town who becomes fascinated with rocketry after seeing Sputnik cross the night sky. It’s hopeful without being syrupy and nostalgic without becoming ridiculous.
And, come on. It’s literally called October Sky.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
October • cool nights • small town • football • changing seasons • nostalgia
DOOZY VERDICT: A great reminder that fall can feel like a beginning rather than an ending.
9. 🌾 The Village (2004)
THE VIBE: Woods, lanterns, isolation and the considerably creepier side of autumn.
M. Night Shyamalan’s The Village takes place in an isolated community surrounded by woods supposedly inhabited by mysterious creatures. Whether you love the movie’s famous twist or want to argue about it for the next 45 minutes is between you and M. Night.
But the atmosphere? Absolutely fall.
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Forests • lanterns • harvest colors • fog • chilly nights • unsettling atmosphere
DOOZY VERDICT: This is what happens when the cozy fall road trip takes a wrong turn.
10. 🎃 Sleepy Hollow (1999)
THE VIBE: Fog. Forests. Pumpkins. Headless horsemen. Things have escalated.
Tim Burton’s gothic take on Washington Irving’s classic story follows Ichabod Crane as he investigates a series of mysterious deaths in the village of Sleepy Hollow. We’re getting considerably closer to Halloween territory now, but that’s exactly why it belongs at the end of our list. Start September with Meg Ryan walking through Central Park.
Finish it with Christopher Walken missing his head. That’s seasonal progression. 😂
🍂 THE FALL FACTOR
Fog • pumpkins • forests • colonial New England • gothic mystery • spooky season
DOOZY VERDICT: The perfect bridge from FALL INTO AWESOME™ into the darker nights ahead.
