There’s food… and then there’s fall food.

The minute the air gets cooler and the leaves start changing, suddenly we’re craving warm apple crisp, big pots of chili, cider donuts, and basically anything containing cinnamon. Fall apparently gives us permission to eat like we’re preparing for hibernation, and frankly, we’re not arguing. 😂  From September through Thanksgiving, these are 15 fall foods worth waiting all year for.

1. 🍎 Apple Cider Donuts

If fall had an official food, apple cider donuts would make a strong case for the title. Warm, soft, covered in cinnamon sugar, and preferably purchased from an orchard where you can pretend the apple picking you just did somehow offsets eating three donuts in the parking lot.

DOOZY TIP: Warm one for a few seconds before eating. You’re welcome.

2. 🥧 Apple Crisp

Apples are good. Apples baked under a ridiculous layer of brown sugar, cinnamon, oats and butter are considerably better. Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream while it’s still warm and you’ve reached peak October.

3. 🌶️ A Big Bowl of Chili

The first genuinely cold day of fall practically demands chili. Beef. Beans. Tomatoes. Peppers. Cheese. Sour cream. Maybe some cornbread on the side. And yes, we know some people believe beans don’t belong in chili. You folks can fight amongst yourselves in the comments. 😂

4. 🎃 Pumpkin Pie

Eventually somebody had to actually put pumpkin on this list. Pumpkin pie is one of those foods many of us barely think about for ten months of the year, then November arrives and suddenly there had damn well better be one on the table. Whipped cream isn’t optional.

5. 🧀 Homemade Mac & Cheese

Not the blue box. We’re talking about serious fall mac and cheese. Bubbling cheese sauce, crispy baked top, ridiculously cheesy center. It’s comfort food wearing sweatpants.

6. 🍲 Chicken Pot Pie

Chicken, vegetables and creamy gravy tucked beneath a flaky golden crust. It’s warm, filling and essentially a blanket you can eat. Which sounds strange until it’s 42 degrees and raining outside.

7. 🍁 Maple Everything

Maple syrup. Maple cookies. Maple candy. Maple coffee. Maple-glazed bacon. Fall is when New England collectively remembers that trees can make dessert. Nature is magnificent.

8. 🥣 Butternut Squash Soup

Creamy butternut squash soup with warm bread is one of those meals that just feels like fall. Bonus points for eating it while looking dramatically out a window at colorful leaves.

9. 🦃 Thanksgiving Stuffing

Turkey gets the publicity. Stuffing knows who the real star is. Whether you call it stuffing or dressing, Thanksgiving would be a considerably sadder affair without a giant serving of this stuff covered in gravy.

10. 🥔 Mashed Potatoes & Gravy

We’re counting them together because separating mashed potatoes from gravy seems unnecessarily cruel. Creamy potatoes. Butter. Gravy. Repeat until Thanksgiving pants become necessary.

11. 🍞 Fresh-Baked Pumpkin Bread

This is one of the few acceptable ways for pumpkin spice to invade breakfast. Warm pumpkin bread with cinnamon, nutmeg and perhaps chocolate chips? Coffee beside it?

That’s a fall morning.

12. 🥧 Chicken & Biscuits

Creamy chicken and vegetables topped with big fluffy biscuits. It’s not particularly glamorous. It photographs like beige construction material.

And it’s absolutely delicious. Fall comfort food doesn’t need an Instagram account.

13. 🍠 Sweet Potato Casserole

Sweet potatoes apparently looked at dessert and thought: “I can do that.” Brown sugar, butter, pecans, marshmallows… At some point we’re going to have to stop pretending this is a vegetable side dish. 😂

14. 🥧 Pecan Pie

Sticky. Sweet. Nutty. Ridiculously rich. You don’t need an enormous piece. Of course, that has never stopped anybody. Warm it slightly and add vanilla ice cream for maximum autumnal irresponsibility.

15. 🦃 The Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich

Perhaps the greatest fall food isn’t actually served on Thanksgiving. It’s served the next day. Turkey. Stuffing. Cranberry sauce. Maybe mashed potatoes. Gravy if structural engineering permits. Pile everything between two slices of bread and behold:

The Thanksgiving Leftover Sandwich.

The meal that proves sometimes leftovers are better than the original.

🍂 What Did We Miss?

That’s our 15, but fall food opinions are serious business.

What’s the ONE food that officially makes it feel like fall for you?

Apple cider donuts? Chili? Pumpkin pie? Something your family makes every year?

Drop it in the comments because there’s a very good chance Part Two is going to be necessary. 😁
