🫎 DOOZYDOO Moose Rating: 7/10
(It’s probably closer to a 6.5… but we’re willing to admit Kathryn Newton earned this movie an extra half point. πŸ˜„)
Some movies have you yelling…
“RUN!!”
This one had us yelling…
“WHY ARE YOU DOING THAT?!”
Seriously.
If there was a questionable decision to make…
Someone made it.
“Let’s swim into the creepy underwater cave.”
“Let’s ignore the warning.”
“Let’s split up.”
“Let’s do the exact opposite of what common sense suggests.”
By the halfway point, we weren’t even rooting for the characters anymore…
We were rooting for common sense. πŸ˜‚
πŸ‘ The Good
The underwater cave setting is genuinely creepy.
The claustrophobic atmosphere works.
The cinematography is beautiful.
And Kathryn Newton once again proves she’s one of the most likable actresses in horror right now. She gives the movie far more credibility than the script deserves. Critics also singled her performance out as one of the film’s strengths while praising the tense cave setting.
🀦 The WTF Moments
This movie should come with a drinking game.
Take one sip every time someone makes a terrible decision.
Actually…
Don’t.
You probably wouldn’t survive the first hour.
There were multiple moments where we literally paused the movie and said,
“No normal person would ever do that.”
The frustrating part is that the premise is actually pretty good.
The movie just keeps sabotaging itself with decisions that exist because the script needs them to.
🎬 Critics vs. Us
Critics have been mixed.
Most agree the cave setting creates real tension and the underwater sequences are effective, but many felt the script relies too heavily on familiar shark-movie clichΓ©s and frustrating character choices.
Oddly enough…
That was our exact reaction.
🦈 DOOZYDOO BONUS BITES
🌴 Filmed in Thailand
The movie was filmed primarily around Krabi, Thailand, one of the world’s most beautiful coastal regions, with additional filming in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. If the scenery made you want to book a trip… mission accomplished.
πŸ’¦ Those water scenes were real work
Lana Condor said the cast spent 12- to 13-hour days in the water, calling the experience physically exhausting. Gavin Casalegno apparently enjoyed it a little more than everyone else. Humans are weird like that.
πŸ‘™ Comfort mattered
Condor requested a custom one-piece swimsuit so she’d feel comfortable during months of underwater filming. The costume department happily accommodated her request.
🎬 Directed by Jeff Wadlow
If the style feels familiar, that’s because Jeff Wadlow also directed Truth or Dare, Fantasy Island (2020), and Kick-Ass 2. He clearly enjoys putting characters into increasingly terrible situations.
🫎 The Doozy Dude Says…
“The shark wasn’t the biggest threat…
…the group’s decision-making was.”
πŸ˜‚
Final Verdict
If you’re expecting the next Jaws…
Keep swimming.
If you’re looking for a fun Friday-night popcorn movie with gorgeous locations, a few effective jump scares, Kathryn Newton, and enough questionable decisions to make you yell at your TV…
You’ll probably have a good time.
