We mean pack your bags, take a boat to an island, watch the beacon sweep across the darkness, fall asleep to the sound of the Atlantic, and wake up wondering whether abandoning civilization and becoming a lighthouse keeper might actually be a viable career choice. Turns out, you can.
Across New England, a small collection of historic light stations allow overnight guests. Some are rustic. Some are romantic. Some require a boat. One costs enough that you may want to sell the boat first. And a few are experiences you won’t find anywhere else.

🥇 Little River Lighthouse
📍 Cutler, Maine
This may be the one we’d choose first. Little River Lighthouse sits on a 15-acre island at the entrance to Cutler Harbor in Downeast Maine.
Getting there is part of the adventure. Guests meet volunteers in Cutler and take about a 12-minute boat ride to the island. Then you’re staying in the restored 1888 keeper’s house, surrounded by pine trees, rocky shoreline and the Bay of Fundy. And here’s the killer detail: Because of its location, guests can be among the first people in the United States to greet the sunrise. Coffee. Maine coast. Lighthouse. Sunrise. We’re done here.
🛏️ 2026 Stay Details
The overnight season runs June 1 through September 30. One family or friend group of up to six occupies the accommodations at a time. There are three rooms, each sleeping two. For 2026, one room for two people is listed at $475 per night, with additional rooms available for an added charge. Reservations are made directly through Friends of Little River Lighthouse.

🥈 Race Point Lighthouse
📍 Provincetown, Massachusetts
Now imagine this: You’ve spent the day on Cape Cod. Then you leave Provincetown behind and head through the dunes toward the very tip of Cape Cod.
Eventually… Race Point Lighthouse appears. This historic station sits inside Cape Cod National Seashore, surrounded by dunes, beaches and the Atlantic. Guests can stay in either the restored Keeper’s House or the more private Whistle House. The Keeper’s House accommodates up to 10 people, while the Whistle House can accommodate up to eight. The 2026 overnight season runs from July 3 through November 23. Keeper’s House guests can receive volunteer transportation, while Whistle House guests need their own properly permitted four-wheel-drive vehicle to cross the sand. And frankly, arriving at your lighthouse by driving across Cape Cod dunes only makes the whole thing cooler.

🥉 Rose Island Lighthouse
📍 Newport, Rhode Island
Here’s another bucket-list contender. Rose Island sits on 18 acres in Narragansett Bay, just offshore from Newport. You take roughly a 12-minute boat ride to reach the island. Once the daytime world disappears, you’re surrounded by water, historic structures, beaches and a wildlife refuge. And then… Everyone leaves. Rose Island describes the experience as off-grid and largely independent. After your arrival, tour and orientation, you’re left to enjoy the island without full-time staff or hotel-style services. Some accommodations don’t even have conventional electricity or plumbing. You bring your own food. There are no restaurants. There are no stores.
It’s you, the lighthouse and Narragansett Bay. Now that’s a getaway.

4. Bakers Island Light

Want to get away from Salem’s witches for a night? Take a boat into Salem Sound. Bakers Island Light Station has been helping guide vessels through these waters for more than two centuries, and today you can stay inside the historic Assistant Keeper’s House. The accommodations are deliberately rustic.
Solar power. Limited lighting. Limited hot water. Basic furniture. Propane cooking. And enough room for up to six people. For 2026, two-night stays are offered from June through September, with four-night stays available during July and August. Boat transportation is included in the overnight price.
This isn’t a luxury resort. That’s precisely why we like it. You’re staying at a lighthouse on an island.

5. Whitehead Light Station
📍 Whitehead Island, Maine
Okay. Now we’re getting fancy. Whitehead Light Station sits on an island off Maine’s Midcoast, roughly eight miles southwest of Rockland. The historic keeper’s house has seven bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, along with two sitting rooms, a library, dining room and full kitchen. There’s boat transportation. You can arrange a private cook. You can arrange massage therapy. You can arrange yoga. You can get fresh lobster from a local lobsterman and cook it on the rocks. We’re fairly certain lighthouse keepers in 1870 did not have massage therapists. Progress has its benefits. The station is available for rentals from June through October. The published rental price is $8,150 for seven days/six nights, plus Maine lodging tax, with a three-night minimum. Expensive? Yes. But split among a group staying in seven bedrooms? Suddenly things get interesting.

6. Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse
📍 Swan’s Island, Maine
Even the journey here feels like New England. Take the ferry from the Mount Desert Island area to Swan’s Island, then make your way to Burnt Coat Harbor Light. The lighthouse was first lit in 1872, and its keeper’s house once housed the families responsible for maintaining the beacon. Today, the upstairs has been transformed into a rental apartment with a bedroom, living room, kitchen and bathroom. Summer stays are generally offered as weekly rentals. But here’s what sells us: There’s an oceanside porch with rocking chairs. Lobster boats pass nearby. There are almost two miles of trails. And two beaches are within the lighthouse property. That’s not a vacation. That’s a Maine screensaver you somehow walked into.

7. Goose Rocks Lighthouse

Now THIS is sleeping in a lighthouse. Goose Rocks isn’t a keeper’s cottage sitting comfortably beside a tower. The keeper’s quarters are inside the lighthouse itself. Built in 1890, this classic “sparkplug” lighthouse rises directly from the waters of the Fox Islands Thoroughfare between North Haven and Vinalhaven. During summer, visitors can arrange overnight stays as temporary lighthouse keepers. Accommodations can handle up to six people, with two bedrooms and a bunk room. No sprawling lawn. No quaint village outside your door. You’re sleeping in a lighthouse surrounded by water. We’re awarding bonus points for commitment to the assignment.

8. Greens Ledge Lighthouse
📍 Long Island Sound, Connecticut
And then there’s Greens Ledge. This is the one you send to someone with the message: “Holy crap. Look at THIS.” Located about a mile offshore between Norwalk and Darien, Greens Ledge is a seven-story cast-iron lighthouse standing directly in Long Island Sound. And yes… You sleep inside the lighthouse. Not beside it. Not in the former keeper’s cottage. Inside. The. Lighthouse. The active beacon continues sweeping across the Sound above you while you get panoramic views toward Connecticut, New York and, in the distance, the Manhattan skyline. It’s off-grid but surprisingly comfortable, with solar and wind power, a full kitchen, two bathrooms and even an outdoor hot-water shower. There’s a catch. Overnight stays are offered only about 5 to 10 nights per year, with proceeds helping preserve the lighthouse. And this is the luxury splurge of our list. Recent reporting has put the experience at roughly $3,500 per night. Three thousand five hundred dollars. For that price, we’re taking every complimentary tiny shampoo bottle home. Still… Would we do it if money weren’t an issue?

Maybe you’re thinking: This all sounds fantastic, but I also enjoy electricity, restaurants, hot showers and civilization. We haven’t forgotten you. 😂 The Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis gives you the historic lighthouse atmosphere with an actual oceanfront resort attached. The property sits on nine oceanfront acres with a private sandy beach, heated pool, restaurant and traditional Cape Cod accommodations. It’s open for its 88th season in 2026. It’s not the isolated keeper experience of Little River or Goose Rocks. But if your travel companion’s response to “off-grid lighthouse” is an immediate and decisive NO, this may save the vacation.
