You don’t need to spend hours rebuilding your LinkedIn profile to make it better. Sometimes, five minutes is enough. If you only have time to make one change to your LinkedIn profile today, update your headline. Your headline is one of the first things people see when they find you on LinkedIn. Yet many people never change it. They simply let LinkedIn display their current job title.

That’s a missed opportunity.

Your Job Title Isn’t Your Whole Story

Let’s say your current headline says:

Administrative Assistant

That’s accurate, but it doesn’t tell someone much about what you can actually do. Maybe you coordinate projects, organize events, communicate with customers, manage schedules and keep an office running smoothly. That’s a much bigger story than two words. The same is true for almost any profession. A teacher might have experience in leadership, training, technology and communications. A retail manager might have experience leading teams, improving customer service, managing budgets and training employees. A project coordinator might already be doing much of the work associated with project management.

Your headline can help connect your current job with the skills you want people to notice.

Try This Simple Formula

You don’t need to make this complicated.

Try:

Current Role or Professional Area | Key Skills | Career Focus

For example:

Project Coordinator | Project Planning • Communication • Team Collaboration

Or:

Communications Professional | Public Relations • Community Engagement • Digital Strategy

Or:

Educator | Training • Instructional Technology • Program Leadership

These headlines tell us more than a job title alone.

They also contain words that someone searching LinkedIn for people with those skills might actually use.

Think About Where You’re Going

Here’s where your headline can become especially useful. You don’t have to limit yourself to describing the job you have today. Your headline can also help position you for the job you want next. Suppose you’re currently an educator but want to move into corporate learning and development. Your headline doesn’t have to say only:

High School Teacher

You might use:

Educator & Training Professional | Learning & Development • Technology • Program Management

You’re not pretending to have a job you don’t have. You’re highlighting real skills in a way that helps employers understand how your experience could transfer. That’s an important difference.

Don’t Stuff It With Buzzwords

There is also such a thing as trying too hard. Avoid filling your headline with vague terms like:

Visionary | Innovator | Thought Leader | Change Agent | Results-Driven Leader

Those words may sound impressive, but they don’t tell a recruiter or potential employer very much. Use the space to tell people what you actually do. Specific beats impressive.

Take the Five-Minute Test

Pull up your LinkedIn profile and read your current headline.

Then ask yourself three questions:

  1. Does this tell someone what I actually do well?
  2. Does it include skills I want employers to notice?
  3. Does it point toward where I want my career to go?

If not, give yourself five minutes and rewrite it.

Don’t obsess over making it perfect.

Your career will change. Your goals will change. Your headline can change with them.

The important thing is making sure your LinkedIn profile represents where you are now and where you’re trying to go.

Small Career Moves Add Up

Career development doesn’t always mean earning another degree, starting a new certification or applying for 50 jobs. Sometimes it’s much smaller. Update a headline. Make a new connection. Improve one section of your résumé. Learn one new skill. Reach out to someone in an industry you’re interested in. None of those things will transform your career overnight. But consistently making small, intentional moves can put you in a much better position when the right opportunity appears.

Your Career & Life Launch Challenge

Give yourself five minutes today.

Open LinkedIn.

Rewrite your headline.

Then get on with your day.

One small career move: done. ✅
