š¹ The Classic Margarita: Simple, Fresh & Damn Good
Some drinks don’t need reinventing. The classic Margarita has been around for decades for a reason. It’s bright, refreshing, easy to make, and requires just a handful of ingredients. Forget the giant bottle of neon-green Margarita mix. A great Margarita comes down to tequila, orange liqueur and fresh lime juice. Add a little agave if you like yours sweeter, salt the rim, and you’re done.
Simple wins.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1
Ingredients
- 2 oz blanco tequila
- 1 oz orange liqueur, such as triple sec or Cointreau
- 1 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz agave syrup, optional
- Ice
- Kosher salt or coarse salt for the rim
- Lime wheel or wedge for garnish
š¹ How to Make a Margarita
1. Salt the rim.
Run a lime wedge around the outside edge of your glass. Dip the rim into a small plate of salt.
Don’t want salt? Skip it. The Margarita police have considerably more important things to worry about.
2. Fill your shaker.
Add tequila, orange liqueur, fresh lime juice and optional agave syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
3. Shake it.
Shake vigorously for about 10ā15 seconds until everything is well chilled.
4. Pour.
Strain into your prepared glass over fresh ice.
Prefer yours straight up? Strain it into a chilled coupe or Margarita glass without ice.
5. Garnish.
Add a lime wheel or wedge.
Drink responsibly and enjoy.
šāš© Fresh Lime Makes a Difference
If there’s one place not to take a shortcut, it’s the lime juice. Fresh lime gives a Margarita its bright, tart flavor and balances the tequila and sweetness of the orange liqueur. Bottled lime juice will technically make a Margarita. Fresh lime juice makes a good Margarita. That’s worth squeezing a lime.
š„ What Tequila Should You Use?
For a classic Margarita, blanco tequila is an easy choice. Blanco tequila generally has a clean, bright flavor that works especially well with fresh citrus. You don’t need the most expensive bottle on the shelf, either. Pick a tequila you enjoy drinking and let the ingredients work together. Save the fancy stuff for another night.
šÆ Sweet or Tart?
This is where you get to make the drink yours. Try the Margarita first without added sweetener. If it’s too tart, add about 1/4 to 1/2 ounce of agave syrup and shake again. Some people like Margaritas sharp and citrus-forward. Others prefer them slightly sweeter. Neither group needs to start a war over it.
š§ Salt or No Salt?
We’re firmly in your drink, your rules territory. A salted rim complements the lime and tequila beautifully, but it’s completely optional. You can also salt only half the rim. That lets you switch between salted and unsalted sips, which is remarkably sophisticated behavior for something involving tequila.

2 parts tequila + 1 part orange liqueur + 1 part fresh lime juice.
Start there.
Then adjust the sweetness to your taste.
Once you know that basic formula, you don’t really need a recipe anymore.
Make Something Awesome
The classic Margarita proves that a good cocktail doesn’t need twelve ingredients, smoke pouring from the glass, or a bartender wielding a blowtorch.
Sometimes you just need good tequila, fresh lime, orange liqueur and five minutes.
