Some inventions begin with years of research, carefully drawn plans and teams of brilliant people trying to solve a specific problem.

Others begin with:

β€œWell…that wasn’t supposed to happen.”

A melted candy bar, a failed superglue, a frozen drink left outside and even the wrong electronic component have helped produce things we now take completely for granted.

Here are 10 everyday inventions that exist because something went wonderfully wrong.

1. 🍿 The Microwave Oven

Engineer Percy Spencer was working at Raytheon with magnetrons, devices used in radar equipment, when he noticed something peculiar.

A chocolate bar in his pocket had melted.

Instead of getting annoyed about the state of his pants and moving on with his day, Spencer investigated.

He experimented with popcorn near the magnetron and watched the kernels pop. Raytheon subsequently developed the technology for cooking food and filed a patent in 1945.

The first commercial microwave, called the Radarange, arrived in 1947.

There was just one small problem.

It stood about six feet tall, weighed roughly 750 pounds and cost $3,000.

Suddenly that enormous microwave hogging half your kitchen counter doesn’t seem so bad.


2. πŸ“ Post-it Notes

In 1968, 3M scientist Spencer Silver was trying to develop a strong adhesive.

He failed.

Instead, he created an adhesive that stuck to surfaces but could also be easily removed.

Not exactly what he’d been looking for.

Silver knew his strange adhesive might have a purpose, though, and kept trying to find one.

Years later, fellow 3M scientist Art Fry needed bookmarks that wouldn’t keep falling out of his church hymnal.

Fry remembered Silver’s weird adhesive.

Post-it Notes were born.

Turns out sometimes inventing the wrong thing is considerably more lucrative than inventing the right one.


3. 🍧 Popsicles

This may be the greatest accomplishment ever achieved by an 11-year-old who forgot to clean up after himself.

In 1905, young Frank Epperson reportedly left a mixture of powdered soda and water outside overnight with a stirring stick still inside.

The temperature dropped.

The drink froze.

And the stick became a convenient handle.

Nearly two decades later, Epperson patented his frozen treat on a stick and began selling what he initially called Eppsicles.

His children reportedly called them something else:

Pop’s ‘sicles.

Eventually, Popsicle stuck.

Parents everywhere should probably reconsider yelling at kids for leaving their drinks outside.

Probably.


4. πŸ§ͺ Teflon

In 1938, chemist Roy Plunkett was working for DuPont and researching new refrigerants.

One morning, Plunkett and his assistant discovered that gas they had stored in a cylinder wouldn’t come out.

Oddly, the cylinder still weighed as though it contained something.

They opened it.

Inside was a mysterious white powder.

Plunkett investigated rather than throwing it away and discovered that the material was unusually slippery, heat-resistant and chemically inert.

That accidental material became PTFE, eventually marketed as Teflon.

And decades later, humanity would use it to prevent scrambled eggs from becoming permanently fused to frying pans.

Progress.


5. πŸ‘Ÿ Scotchgard

Another 3M scientist. Another laboratory accident.

Chemist Patsy Sherman was working on materials intended for aircraft fuel lines when a lab assistant accidentally spilled a synthetic latex mixture onto a pair of tennis shoes.

They tried cleaning it off.

Something strange happened.

Water and solvents beaded up and rolled right off the affected area.

Sherman realized the accident had revealed something potentially very useful.

That discovery eventually led to Scotchgard, the stain- and water-repellent treatment.

Somebody ruined a pair of shoes and helped create a product designed to stop people from ruining things.

There’s something beautifully circular about that.


6. ❀️ The Implantable Pacemaker

This accident went considerably beyond snacks and office supplies.

Engineer Wilson Greatbatch was building a device intended to record heart sounds when he accidentally installed the wrong resistor.

Instead of behaving as expected, his device began producing regular electrical pulses.

Greatbatch realized those pulses resembled the electrical rhythm needed to regulate a human heartbeat.

He spent the next two years refining the idea and eventually developed the first successful implantable pacemaker.

One wrong electronic component helped lead to technology that would save millions of lives.

That’s one hell of a productive mistake.


7. 🧸 Play-Doh

Play-Doh wasn’t originally a toy.

It was wallpaper cleaner.

Seriously.

Kutol Products manufactured a soft putty-like material that homeowners could roll across wallpaper to remove soot left by coal-burning furnaces.

Then homes started switching to cleaner heating systems.

Suddenly there wasn’t much soot to clean.

The company’s wallpaper-cleaning business was in trouble until Kay Zufall, sister-in-law of company executive Joe McVicker, learned that children could use the material for arts and crafts.

The cleaner was reformulated and marketed to kids.

In 1956, Play-Doh arrived.

From cleaning crap off your walls to getting mashed permanently into your carpet.

Quite the journey.


8. πŸ‘• Velcro

Swiss engineer George de Mestral went outdoors and returned with annoying burrs stuck to his clothing and his dog’s fur.

Most of us would pull them off, swear a little and continue walking.

De Mestral put them under a microscope.

He discovered that tiny hooks on the burrs were grabbing onto loops in fabric and fur.

That observation inspired him to develop a synthetic hook-and-loop fastening system.

Eventually, we got Velcro.

Technically, this wasn’t an accidental invention as much as an accidental encounter that inspired one.

But we’re allowing it because burrs deserve credit for accomplishing something other than irritating hikers.


9. πŸš— Vulcanized Rubber

Natural rubber used to have a rather inconvenient personality.

It could become sticky when hot and brittle when cold.

Inventor Charles Goodyear spent years experimenting with ways to make rubber more useful.

The famous version of the story says that in 1839, Goodyear accidentally dropped a rubber-and-sulfur mixture onto a hot stove and discovered that heat transformed it into a much tougher material.

There is a wrinkle to the legend: historians note that describing the discovery as pure luck oversimplifies things because Goodyear had already spent years deliberately experimenting with rubber and sulfur.

Still, the unexpected heat exposure helped point toward the process we know as vulcanization.

That process ultimately made durable rubber practical for countless products.

Including, rather appropriately, tires.


10. 🧷 Hook-and-Loop Fasteners, Nonstick Pans…and the Power of Paying Attention

Okay, we’re cheating slightly on #10.

Because the most interesting fact isn’t another product.

It’s what these accidental inventions have in common.

Accidents happen constantly.

Chocolate melts. Drinks freeze. Chemicals spill. Components get installed incorrectly. Weird substances appear where scientists expected something else.

Most of those accidents disappear without changing anything.

The breakthrough comes when someone notices the unexpected result and thinks:

Wait. Why did that happen?

Roy Plunkett didn’t create Teflon merely because something strange appeared inside a cylinder. He recognized that the strange material might matter. Percy Spencer didn’t invent microwave cooking simply because his chocolate melted. He started experimenting.

That’s why accidental invention is often better described as serendipity rather than dumb luck.

The accident creates the opportunity.

Curiosity turns it into something useful.


🀯 Maybe Mistakes Aren’t Always Bad

We’re trained from childhood to avoid mistakes.

Get the answer right. Follow the instructions. Don’t screw it up.

Yet the history of invention is filled with people who encountered something that wasn’t supposed to happen and became curious instead of frustrated.

A failed adhesive became Post-it Notes.

Wallpaper cleaner became Play-Doh.

A melted chocolate bar helped lead to the microwave oven.

A wrong resistor helped lead to the implantable pacemaker.

Maybe the lesson isn’t that mistakes magically create great ideas.

It’s that occasionally the interesting part begins when the plan doesn’t work.
