🍂 7 Fall Weekend Getaways That Aren’t New England
New England doesn’t own fall.
We love a good Vermont back road, covered bridge and ridiculous amount of maple-flavored everything as much as anyone. But sometimes you want a fall weekend that looks a little different.
Maybe it’s mountain views in North Carolina. Ghost stories beneath Spanish moss. Crisp afternoons along the Chicago lakefront. Halloween at a theme park. Or Las Vegas when walking outside no longer feels like volunteering to be baked.
So pack a bag. Here are seven fall weekend getaways outside New England that are absolutely worth considering.
🍁 1. Asheville, North Carolina
For: Mountains, food and serious fall color
If you’re chasing foliage but want something different from New England, Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains are an easy choice.
Because elevations vary dramatically around Asheville, fall color generally works its way from the highest ridges in late September toward the city and lower elevations through October and into early November. Explore Asheville
Spend a weekend exploring downtown Asheville, eating extremely well, checking out local breweries and getting into the mountains.
DOOZY TIP: Don’t build your entire itinerary around one specific stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway without checking first. Hurricane Helene recovery and construction are still affecting sections of the Parkway in 2026, and the National Park Service recommends checking current road status before traveling. Perfect weekend:
🏔️ Scenic drive • 🍺 Asheville breweries • 🍎 Mountain fall flavors • 🥾 Easy hike • 🍽️ Great dinner
👻 2. Savannah, Georgia
For: Spooky season with Southern charm
Savannah feels like it was designed specifically for October.
Historic squares. Spanish moss. Old homes. Cobblestone streets. Excellent food.
And ghosts.
Lots and lots of ghosts.
Savannah leans enthusiastically into its haunted reputation, and fall brings cooler breezes, outdoor events and plenty of opportunities for ghost tours and haunted-history walks. Visit Savannah
Spend the afternoon wandering the Historic District, grab a great dinner and then take a nighttime ghost tour.
Perfect weekend:
👻 Ghost tour • 🌳 Historic squares • 🍤 Southern food • 🚶 Walkable exploring • 🥃 Evening cocktails
DOOZY VERDICT: If Halloween is basically a personality trait for you, put Savannah on the list.
🌆 3. Chicago, Illinois
For: The ultimate big-city fall weekend
Chicago in summer gets plenty of attention.
But Chicago in fall?
That’s sneaky good.
The lakefront cools down, leaves start changing around the parks, and the city packs autumn with architecture events, festivals, theater, Halloween activities and food. Chicago’s official tourism organization highlights September through early November as the city’s fall-color window. Choose Chicago
Walk Millennium Park. Explore the Riverwalk. Take an architecture cruise if they’re still running during your visit. Eat deep-dish pizza. Visit a museum. Find a neighborhood restaurant.
Then spend ten minutes explaining why you definitely needed another Chicago hot dog.
Perfect weekend:
🏙️ Architecture • 🍕 Pizza • 🌊 Lakefront • 🎭 Culture • 🍺 Neighborhood bars
🎶 4. Nashville, Tennessee
For: Live music, food and a fall weekend with energy
If your idea of a relaxing weekend involves absolutely no relaxing whatsoever, welcome to Nashville. 😂
Fall brings milder temperatures along with concerts, festivals, football, food events and plenty of reasons to wander beyond Broadway. Nashville’s fall calendar traditionally includes music, film, food, cultural and craft events. Visit Nashville TN
Catch some live music. Explore neighborhoods like 12South. Eat barbecue. Visit Centennial Park. Then, naturally, find more live music.
Because apparently Nashville has decided sleep is optional.
Perfect weekend:
🎸 Live music • 🍖 BBQ • 🥃 Tennessee whiskey • 🏈 Football • 🍂 Crisp evenings
🏛️ 5. Washington, DC
For: A surprisingly affordable culture-packed getaway
Here’s the underrated part about Washington in fall:
A huge amount of the good stuff is free.
You can spend a morning walking the National Mall, disappear into Smithsonian museums for hours, wander Georgetown, explore monuments after dark and head through Rock Creek Park without constructing an attraction-ticket budget that requires financing.
Fall also brings foliage around the Mall, Tidal Basin and Rock Creek Park, along with festivals, exhibits and Halloween events. Visit Washington DC
That makes DC especially good for a three-day weekend.
Perfect weekend:
🏛️ Smithsonian museums • 🍂 National Mall • 🚶 Georgetown • 🌳 Rock Creek Park • 🌙 Monuments after dark
DOOZY TIP: Spend the money you save on attractions on a better hotel or a really good dinner. We support responsible financial decision-making of this nature.
🎃 6. Orlando, Florida
For: Halloween people who would rather wear shorts
Fall doesn’t require foliage.
Sometimes it requires roller coasters and fog machines.
Orlando goes big for Halloween, with seasonal events running from late summer into early November. Fall also brings food festivals, concerts, sports and other special events around the destination. Visit Orlando
That makes October one of our favorite times to consider an Orlando trip.
Do the theme parks. Hit a Halloween event. Spend some time outside the parks. Find somewhere fantastic to eat.
And enjoy your pumpkin-spice season without scraping frost off anything.
Perfect weekend:
🎢 Theme parks • 🎃 Halloween events • 🍽️ Food • 🌴 Pool time • ☀️ Warm weather

🎰 7. Las Vegas, Nevada
For: Finally walking the Strip without melting
Vegas in summer can feel like someone left the oven door open.
Fall changes the equation.
As temperatures drop, outdoor activities become considerably more appealing, and the city’s fall calendar fills with festivals, entertainment, sports and Halloween events. Visit Las Vegas
Spend a couple nights exploring the Strip, catch a show, eat something ridiculous and venture downtown to Fremont Street.
Or use Vegas as the jumping-off point for something completely different, like exploring nearby desert scenery.
Perfect weekend:
🎰 Vegas Strip • 🍽️ Big dinner • 🎭 Show • 🏜️ Desert adventure • 🌃 Fremont Street
Explore more: We’ll be building out plenty more Vegas ideas through All of Las Vegas™.
🍂 So…Where Are We Going?
Fall travel doesn’t have to mean chasing foliage through New England.
You can chase mountain color in Asheville, ghosts in Savannah, big-city energy in Chicago, music in Nashville, museums in Washington, Halloween in Orlando, or considerably more comfortable temperatures in Las Vegas.
Seven destinations.
Seven completely different fall weekends.
And frankly, that’s the fun of it.
🧳 DOOZY TRAVEL™ TIP
Before booking, compare the whole trip, not just the hotel rate.
Check airfare, hotel, rental car or airport transportation, attraction tickets, parking and travel insurance. A destination with a slightly more expensive room can still produce the cheaper weekend once everything else is added up.
Discover it. Plan it. Book it. Enjoy it.
MAKE LIFE AWESOME.
