Easy Crockpot Chicken & Gravy: The Ultimate Comfort Food Dinner
Some dinners require chopping, sautéing, multiple pans and the sort of kitchen enthusiasm most of us simply do not possess on a Tuesday.
Crockpot Chicken & Gravy is not one of those dinners.
This is classic comfort food with very little effort: tender chicken slow-cooked in a rich, creamy gravy and served over mashed potatoes, rice, noodles or biscuits. It’s warm. It’s filling. It’s ridiculously easy. In other words, CROCKTOBER™ material.
🍗 Why You’ll Love Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
There are plenty of reasons this one deserves a spot in the fall dinner rotation.
- Easy prep: You can have everything in the slow cooker in about 10 minutes.
- Simple ingredients: Nothing here requires an expedition to a specialty grocery store.
- Family friendly: Creamy chicken and gravy isn’t exactly a difficult sales pitch.
- Great leftovers: Make extra and tomorrow’s lunch is handled.
- Ultimate comfort food: Put this over mashed potatoes and October suddenly seems like a pretty good month.

You’ll need:
2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
2 packets chicken gravy mix
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
1½ cups chicken broth
½ teaspoon garlic powder
½ teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon dried thyme, optional

½ cup sour cream at the end
Optional Add-Ins
This recipe is easy to customize. Try adding:
🍄 Sliced mushrooms
🧅 Diced onion
🥕 Sliced carrots
🌿 Fresh herbs
🧄 Minced garlic
You don’t need to complicate it, though. The entire point of crockpot cooking is making dinner easier, not creating additional administrative duties.
🥣 How to Make Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
1. Add the chicken
Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of your slow cooker.
Season with garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper and thyme.
2. Make the gravy mixture
In a bowl, whisk together the chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup and chicken broth until reasonably smooth.
Pour the mixture over the chicken.
3. Let the crockpot do its thing
Cover and cook until the chicken reaches 165°F internally and is tender:
LOW: approximately 5–6 hours
HIGH: approximately 3–4 hours
Slow cookers vary, and thinner chicken breasts may finish sooner, so start checking before the end of the cooking window.
4. Shred the chicken
Remove the cooked chicken and shred it with two forks.
You can also cut it into chunks if you prefer larger pieces.
Return the chicken to the gravy and stir everything together.
5. Make it extra creamy
For richer gravy, stir in about ½ cup of sour cream after returning the chicken to the slow cooker.
Let everything warm together for another 10–15 minutes.
Then comes the difficult part:
Deciding what to put underneath it.
🥔 What to Serve With Crockpot Chicken & Gravy
Mashed potatoes are the obvious champion here. Make a little crater in the middle, pile on the chicken and don’t be shy with the gravy.
But you’ve got options.
Try serving it over:
🍚 White or brown rice
🍜 Egg noodles
🥔 Mashed potatoes
🥐 Biscuits
🥔 Baked potatoes
For something green alongside it, add broccoli, peas, roasted Brussels sprouts or a simple salad.
Apparently vegetables are something we’re supposed to eat occasionally.
🔥 Make It Awesome
The basic recipe is deliberately simple, but you can take it in several directions.
Mushroom Chicken & Gravy: Add sliced mushrooms before cooking.
Herb Chicken & Gravy: Add rosemary, thyme and parsley.
Chicken & Gravy Bowls: Layer mashed potatoes, chicken and gravy, corn and shredded cheese.
Open-Faced Chicken Sandwich: Spoon hot chicken and gravy over thick toasted bread.
Chicken & Biscuits: Serve it over split biscuits for an easy shortcut version of chicken and biscuits.
And if you’re feeding people with different tastes, keep the crockpot simple and put toppings on the table.
Everyone customizes their own dinner. Civilization survives another evening.
🧊 What About Leftovers?
Store leftover chicken and gravy in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within 3–4 days.
Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop. If the gravy becomes too thick, stir in a small splash of chicken broth while reheating.
Leftovers are excellent over potatoes, rice or toast, but you can also use the chicken as the beginning of another meal.
That’s one of the great things about slow-cooker cooking: today’s dinner can quietly solve tomorrow’s problem too.
