If you own a Roku device, this is one of those entertainment stories you shouldn’t ignore.

FOX Corporation has announced plans to acquire Roku in a deal valued at approximately $22 billion, creating one of the largest media and streaming companies in the world.

At first glance, it might sound like another corporate merger.

In reality?

This deal could reshape how millions of people watch television.

Wait… FOX Owns Roku Now?

Not yet.

The deal still needs shareholder and regulatory approval and isn’t expected to close until the first half of 2027.

But assuming it goes through, FOX won’t just own TV networks like FOX, FOX News, FOX Sports, and Tubi.

It’ll also own one of the world’s most popular streaming platforms.

That’s a pretty big shift.

Why Roku Matters

For years, Roku has quietly become one of the biggest names in streaming.

More than 100 million households worldwide use Roku devices or Roku-powered TVs to watch Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, YouTube, Max, Tubi, and hundreds of other apps.

For many people…

Roku is television.

FOX isn’t buying another streaming service.

It’s buying the front door to millions of living rooms.

The Real Prize Isn’t Hardware

Sure, Roku makes streaming sticks.

But that’s not what FOX is really after.

The value is:

  • the Roku home screen
  • The Roku Channel
  • advertising technology
  • viewer data
  • direct relationships with millions of streaming households

In today’s entertainment world, controlling how viewers discover content is almost as valuable as creating the content itself.

What Happens to Tubi?

This might be one of the most interesting parts of the deal.

FOX already owns Tubi, one of the fastest-growing free streaming services.

Now imagine combining Tubi with Roku’s massive audience.

That’s a powerful combination.

Expect FOX to look for ways to make Tubi even more prominent on Roku devices.

Should Roku Users Be Worried?

Probably not.

FOX says Roku will continue operating as an open platform that supports all the major streaming services.

That’s good news.

The last thing consumers want is a streaming device that suddenly starts playing favorites.

Whether that remains true over time…

We’ll have to wait and see.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t really about Roku.

It’s about the future of television.

Traditional cable continues to decline.

Streaming keeps growing.

Live sports remain one of the few things millions of people still watch together in real time.

FOX now has a chance to combine:

  • NFL
  • MLB
  • College Football
  • NASCAR
  • FIFA World Cup
  • FOX News
  • Tubi

…with one of the largest streaming platforms on the planet.

That’s a combination every media company wishes it had.

What It Could Mean for You

Nobody’s Roku is changing overnight.

But over the next few years, don’t be surprised if you see:

πŸ“Ί More FOX content integrated throughout Roku.

🎬 Better promotion for Tubi.

🏈 Bigger investments in live sports streaming.

πŸ“ˆ Smarter advertising based on viewing habits.

🀝 New partnerships between content creators and the Roku platform.

Whether that’s good or bad depends on how FOX balances growing its own business while keeping Roku open to everyone.

The Muddy Moose Take

This isn’t just another business acquisition.

It’s one of the biggest entertainment industry moves since Disney acquired much of 21st Century Fox.

Streaming isn’t slowing down.

It’s evolving.

And with this deal, FOX just placed one of the biggest bets in its history on where television is headed next.

One thing is certain:

The battle for your TV screen just got a whole lot more interesting.
