- 1 lb (450g) fresh sausage (such as Italian sausage or your favorite variety), casings removed
- 2 cups (240g) shredded cheese (such as cheddar, mozzarella, or Monterey Jack)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) finely chopped onion
- 1/4 cup (60ml) finely chopped bell pepper
- 1/4 cup (60ml) chopped fresh parsley
- 1 teaspoon (5g) garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon (5g) dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5g) crushed red pepper flakes (optional for added heat)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 3 cups (375g) all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon (15g) granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon (5g) salt
- 2 1/4 teaspoons (7g) active dry yeast
- 1 cup (240ml) warm water
- 2 tablespoons (30ml) olive oil
Instructions:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C); lightly grease a large baking sheet, or line it with parchment paper.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it into small pieces with a wooden spoon, until it is browned and cooked through. Drain any excess grease and set the sausage aside to cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, combine the cooked sausage, shredded cheese, onion, bell pepper, parsley, garlic powder, dried oregano, crushed red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well and set aside.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, and salt in a separate large bowl. In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine the warm water and active dry yeast, allowing the yeast to dissolve and activate for about 5 minutes.
- Pour the activated yeast mixture and olive oil into the flour mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes or until it is smooth and elastic.
- Roll the dough out into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch (6mm) thick. Spread the sausage and cheese mixture evenly over the surface of the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch (12mm) border around the edges.
- Starting from a long side, carefully roll the dough into a log, ensuring the filling stays inside. Pinch the seam closed and place the roll seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake the sausage and cheese bread for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through. Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Serve this delectable sausage and cheese bread warm, and enjoy the combination of savory flavors and tender bread. It’s perfect for sharing with friends and family or indulging in a delicious snack all on your own.
