For nearly three decades, visiting Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort during the holidays meant experiencing something truly magical.

The moment you walked into the lobby, the smell of gingerbread filled the air.

Families gathered for photos.

Kids stared in amazement.

Guests lined up to buy freshly baked gingerbread treats from inside a life-sized Victorian gingerbread house that had become just as iconic as the resort itself.

Unfortunately…

Those days are over.

Disney has officially confirmed that the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House has been permanently retired and will not return for future holiday seasons.

More Than Just a Decoration

This wasn’t simply a festive display.

Since its debut in 1999, the gingerbread house became one of Walt Disney World’s most cherished Christmas traditions.

Each year, Disney pastry chefs spent weeks constructing the massive edible masterpiece using thousands of gingerbread shingles, icing, and candy details.

For many families, it wasn’t really Christmas at Disney until they’d stopped by the Grand Floridian to admire the house—and maybe grab a gingerbread treat on the way out.

It became a tradition generations grew up with.

Why Is Disney Ending It?

The decision comes after the complete redesign of the Grand Floridian’s lobby.

The new centerpiece, The Perch, has transformed the space with a permanent birdcage-inspired lobby bar and updated seating areas.

Along with the resort’s Christmas tree and increased guest traffic, there simply isn’t enough room for the enormous gingerbread house.

Instead, Disney says guests can expect several smaller gingerbread displays throughout the resort.

While those may be beautiful in their own right…

They’re not replacing what made the Grand Floridian so special.

Fans Aren’t Happy

As you’d expect, longtime Disney fans have been expressing disappointment across social media.

Many guests planned entire resort-hopping days around seeing the gingerbread house.

Others returned year after year to recreate family photos in front of it.

For some, it wasn’t just another holiday decoration.

It was part of their family’s Christmas tradition.

Attractions close.

New experiences replace old ones.
