By the power of Grayskull… I expected more.

As someone who grew up with He-Man, Skeletor, Castle Grayskull, and a box full of Masters of the Universe toys, this movie had nostalgia working in its favor before the opening credits even rolled.

The good news?

I had fun.

The bad news?

I don’t think it was worth the price of a movie ticket.

Finally… A Live-Action He-Man That Feels Like He-Man

One thing the movie gets right is that it embraces the weirdness of the franchise.

Magic swords.

Over-the-top villains.

Muscle-bound heroes.

Ridiculous fantasy worlds.

Instead of apologizing for its 1980s roots, it leans into them, and honestly… that was refreshing. Many critics also praised the film for embracing the campy spirit of the original cartoon, even if the storytelling didn’t always stick the landing.

Dumb?

Absolutely.

Fun?

Also yes.

This isn’t The Lord of the Rings.

It’s not trying to be.

It’s loud.

It’s colorful.

It’s cheesy.

Sometimes that’s exactly what you want.

The problem is…

Once the nostalgia wears off, there’s not a whole lot left underneath.

Bigger Doesn’t Always Mean Better

The action is entertaining.

The visuals are solid.

The cast clearly commits to the material.

But the story never rises above “Saturday afternoon popcorn movie.”

It checks all the boxes.

It just never surprises you.

I kept waiting for that one moment where I thought,

“Now THIS is why they brought He-Man back.”

That moment never really arrived.

The Verdict

This isn’t a terrible movie.

It’s also not the comeback Masters of the Universe deserved.

If you’re a lifelong He-Man fan, you’ll probably leave with a smile.

If you have no connection to the franchise, you’re probably wondering what all the fuss was about.

The broader critical response has been mixed. While some reviewers appreciated its fun, nostalgic energy, others felt the movie struggled with its identity and never fully committed to either serious fantasy or camp.

Honestly…

I land somewhere in the middle.

I enjoyed myself.

I just won’t be rushing to watch it again anytime soon.

Save your theater money.

Wait for Prime Video.

That’s where this movie feels most at home.
