Grab the popcorn. Lock the cabin door. And whatever you do, don’t investigate that strange noise coming from the woods.

There’s something wonderfully ridiculous about a Friday the 13th marathon. What began in 1980 as a relatively simple summer-camp slasher eventually gave us decades of Crystal Lake carnage, multiple versions of Jason Voorhees, impostors, supernatural resurrection, Manhattan, dream battles and, because apparently Earth was no longer sufficient, Jason in space. We recently settled in for our own Friday the 13th marathon, which naturally sent us down the rabbit hole of Jason trivia. So before you head back to Camp Crystal Lake, here are 13 things you might not know about Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th franchise.

🔪 1. Jason Isn’t the Killer in the Original Friday the 13th

Let’s start with the big one. Jason Voorhees may be the face of the franchise, but he isn’t the killer in the original 1980 movie. That honor belongs to his mother, Pamela Voorhees, who blames the counselors at Camp Crystal Lake for Jason’s supposed drowning years earlier. Jason does make one rather memorable appearance near the end, but the hockey-mask-wearing killer everyone associates with Friday the 13th hadn’t arrived yet.

🏕️ 2. Jason Doesn’t Become the Main Killer Until Part 2

Friday the 13th Part 2 finally puts Jason in the driver’s seat. Well, perhaps “driver’s seat” isn’t the best expression. Jason seems to prefer walking slowly through the woods while somehow catching people who are sprinting. In Part 2, however, he still doesn’t look like the Jason most people recognize. Instead, he spends much of the movie wearing a burlap sack over his head. Fashion takes time.

🏒 3. The Hockey Mask Doesn’t Appear Until Part III

One of the most famous images in horror history didn’t arrive until Friday the 13th Part III in 1982. Jason obtains a hockey goalie mask, and suddenly everything clicks. Hockey mask. Machete. Crystal Lake. Jason Voorhees. It’s difficult to imagine the character without it today, but audiences had already watched two Friday the 13th movies before the mask ever appeared.

🔪 4. The Final Chapter Was Supposed to Be the End

The fourth movie was released in 1984 with a rather definitive title: Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.

Jason dies. The series ends. Everybody goes home. Except The Final Chapter performed well at the box office, and Hollywood soon discovered an astonishing linguistic loophole in the word “final.” A fifth movie arrived the following year. And then a sixth. And a seventh. And…

You get the idea.

👦 5. Tommy Jarvis Became One of Jason’s Most Important Enemies

The Final Chapter also introduced Tommy Jarvis, originally played by Corey Feldman. Unlike the endless parade of unfortunate Crystal Lake visitors who make decisions like “Let’s split up and search the dark woods,” Tommy actually proves capable of fighting back. The character would return in later movies and become one of the closest things the franchise has to a recurring hero.

😱 6. Jason Isn’t the Killer in Part V Either

After apparently killing Jason in The Final Chapter, the filmmakers faced a minor problem. How do you make another Jason movie without Jason? The answer in Friday the 13th: A New Beginning was surprisingly simple:

Don’t.

The killer is actually an impostor using Jason’s identity. Fans had opinions. Strong opinions. Real Jason would be back soon enough.

⚡ 7. Part VI Basically Turns Jason Into a Supernatural Monster

By Jason Lives: Friday the 13th Part VI, any remaining concern about realism politely leaves the building.

Jason is resurrected by lightning. From that point forward, he’s no longer simply a particularly durable human killer. He’s essentially an undead, superhuman force who can survive punishment that would cause the average person to reconsider their career choices. This is the Jason that increasingly defines the later franchise.

🍂 8. Crystal Lake Isn’t Actually One Place

Camp Crystal Lake feels like one location throughout the series, but the movies were filmed in multiple real-world places. The original movie was famously filmed in New Jersey, while later installments moved production elsewhere. Which leads us to one of our favorite pieces of trivia…

🌲 9. Jason Has New England Roots

Friday the 13th Part 2 was filmed largely in western Connecticut, including locations around Kent and New Preston.

Those quiet roads, wooded hills and lakes that look so perfectly suited to Crystal Lake? That’s New England. We’ve already gone deeper into this one in our All of New England feature exploring the real Connecticut filming locations from Friday the 13th Part 2. And we’re increasingly convinced a future road trip may be required. Preferably during daylight.

🎵 10. That Famous Jason Sound Isn’t Actually “Ch-Ch-Ch, Ah-Ah-Ah”

You know the sound. Ki-ki-ki… ma-ma-ma…

Composer Harry Manfredini created the effect for the original film by manipulating sounds based on the words “kill” and “mommy,” reflecting Pamela Voorhees’ murderous motivation. Over the years, plenty of people have interpreted it as “ch-ch-ch, ah-ah-ah.” Either way, hearing it while standing alone beside a dark lake would be sufficient reason to leave.

🎭 11. A Lot of Actors Have Played Jason

There isn’t one Jason Voorhees. Numerous actors and stunt performers have portrayed the character throughout the franchise. But Kane Hodder became particularly associated with Jason after playing him in four consecutive films beginning with Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood. Different actors brought different physical styles to Jason, but the mask made the character instantly recognizable regardless of who was underneath it.

🚀 12. Jason Eventually Went to Space

Eventually every long-running franchise faces the same difficult creative question: What haven’t we done yet?

In 2001’s Jason X, the answer was apparently: “Put Jason on a spaceship.” And so they did. The movie takes Jason into the future and ultimately transforms him into an upgraded version commonly known as Uber Jason. Is it ridiculous? Absolutely. Is the idea of Jason Voorhees terrorizing people aboard a spaceship also strangely magnificent? We’re not here to judge. Okay, maybe a little.

🏒 13. Jason Became Bigger Than Friday the 13th

Here’s perhaps the most remarkable thing about Jason Voorhees. You don’t have to watch the movies to recognize him.

The hockey mask became one of horror’s most recognizable symbols, alongside Freddy Krueger’s glove and Michael Myers’ white mask. Jason escaped the boundaries of his own franchise decades ago. He’s appeared in video games, toys, costumes, collectibles, comics and countless pieces of pop culture. Show someone a weathered hockey mask around Halloween and there’s a pretty good chance they’ll immediately think:

Jason. Not bad for a character who wasn’t even the killer in the first movie.

🍿 So… How Far Could You Make It?

A complete Friday the 13th marathon is not a casual commitment. It’s practically seasonal employment. But there’s something undeniably fun about returning to Crystal Lake every October, especially once you start noticing how Jason, the mask, the mythology and even the tone of the movies change as the series gets progressively more bonkers. So grab some popcorn, turn down the lights and settle in. Just remember one important rule:

If you’re staying near a lake and someone suggests splitting up to investigate a strange noise in the woods…

Maybe don’t.

🫎🔪 How many Friday the 13th movies have YOU seen? And which one is your favorite?
