Some movies are judged by awards.

Some are judged by box office numbers.

And then there are movies like That Thing You Do!… judged by one simple question:

“Did it make life a little more awesome for two hours?”

The answer?

Absolutely.

Tom Hanks’ directorial debut isn’t trying to be the greatest rock-and-roll movie ever made. It isn’t trying to reinvent cinema. Instead, it captures something surprisingly rare: the pure excitement of chasing a dream with your friends.

Set in the summer of 1964, the film follows a small-town Pennsylvania band that accidentally stumbles into stardom after a new drummer speeds up one of their songs. What follows is a whirlwind ride through radio stations, screaming fans, television appearances, record deals, and the highs and lows that come with overnight success.

It’s funny.

It’s charming.

It’s nostalgic.

Most importantly…

It’s fun.

🎵 The Music Is the Real Star

Let’s be honest.

The title song, “That Thing You Do!”, has absolutely no business being this catchy.

Written by the late Adam Schlesinger, it sounds like a genuine British Invasion hit from the 1960s. By the second chorus you’ll probably find yourself tapping your foot, humming along, or adding it to your playlist for the hundredth time.

Even nearly 30 years later, it still sounds like it could be playing on an oldies station.

That’s an incredible accomplishment.

🎭 The Cast Just Clicks

Tom Everett Scott perfectly captures Guy Patterson’s humble charm.

Liv Tyler is effortlessly lovable.

Steve Zahn steals nearly every scene with his boundless energy.

Johnathon Schaech brings just enough ego to keep things interesting.

And Tom Hanks?

He doesn’t dominate the movie.

Instead, he lets the cast shine while quietly guiding the story with warmth, humor, and perfect pacing.

❤️ The Awesomeness Factor

This is one of those rare comfort movies.

You know the destination.

You know the songs.

You know many of the jokes.

Yet somehow it’s just as enjoyable every single time.

It’s impossible not to smile watching the band celebrate their first radio play.

You can’t help but root for them.

Even the bittersweet moments feel hopeful.

The movie reminds us that success isn’t always measured by how long you’re famous.

Sometimes it’s about having one unforgettable summer that changes your life forever.

🎥 Why It Still Works Today

Unlike many ’90s comedies, That Thing You Do! hasn’t aged poorly.

There’s no reliance on cheap jokes or trendy references.

Instead, it celebrates friendship, music, ambition, and believing that ordinary people can experience extraordinary moments.

That’s timeless.

🫎 The Doozy Dude Says…

Some movies are technically better.

Some are more dramatic.

Some have bigger budgets.

But very few movies leave you happier than when you pressed Play.

That Thing You Do! is pure comfort food for movie lovers. It’s impossible to watch without smiling, humming the title song, and wishing The Wonders had made just one more album.

If you’ve never seen it, fix that.

If it’s been a while…

It’s probably time to watch it again.
